Guide to Umrah Step By Step

If you’re looking for a quick Umrah guide, here are the key rituals of Umrah step by step.

  1. The first step is to cleanse one’s self physically. One must perform Ghusl, which is a purification bath for assuming the state of Ihram. If you cannot perform ghusl you can perform wudu or partial ablution.
  2. The next step is to wear Ihram garments which are two white and stitch sheets for men. The sheet that is worn on the upper body is called the rida and the other which is worn on the lower body is called the izar.
  3. Women should be dressed in simple white clothes and they must adorn an abaya over the regular clothing. Remember to not wear any kind of jewellery makeup for perfume while assuming Ihram.
  4. Footwear of men should reveal the top portion of the food as well as the ankle. Women can wear closed shoes but they must not cover their faces and hands at any time.
  5. Wearing Ihram garments must be followed by performing two rakats of Salah.
  6. After that one must declare the intention for the year to perform Umrah .
  7. Niyyah should be followed by reciting the talbiyah.
  8. After reciting the Talbiyah, one attains the state of Ihram and is now called a Muhrim.
  9. At this stage, it is recommended to make dua for oneself and for others.
  10. Now it is time to enter the holy mosque of al-haram by putting the right foot inside before the left.
  11. Recite supplication recommended for entering a holy Islamic place.
  12. It is suggested that the first sight upon entering the mosque should be that of the holy Kaaba. The gaze must be accompanied by paying respects by raising their hands in making a dua with atmosphere devotion in their hearts.
  13. Next, according to the Umrah guide, one must stand in front of Hajar ul Aswad, which is located in one of the corners of the cube of Kaaba.
  14. Follow the green light which indicates the place from where the ritual of tawaf must start.
  15. At this stage, make niyyah and then start the circumambulation from a point where Hajar Al Aswad is on your right side.
  16. During each round, it is suggested to face and if possible also kiss and touch the holy black stone.
  17. Supplications may be recited whenever passing in front of the blackstone.
  18. It is prescribed that the first three rounds should be performed briskly by men.
  19. Upon completion of the seven rounds, one must say two rakats of Salah.
  20. Then, one must go to Maqam-e-Ibrahim to offer respects and make dua.
  21. Next in the Umrah guide is to drink the holy water from the well of Zamzam. It is available for drinking through fountains and dispensers.
  22. Then, one must try to reach close to the area between Hajar Al-Aswad and the door of the Kaaba which is called Multazam. It is a sunnah to lean against the wall, raise your hands above your head and press your chest and cheeks to the wall.
  23. Just after tawaf, one must start the ritual of Saee. This is the third among the four key Umrah rituals. For this one must proceed to the hill of Safa while reciting an appropriate surah.
  24. Atop the hill, look for a spot from where you can face the Kaaba. Stand there,  raise your hands towards the Kaaba and recite a supplication before starting the first circuit towards the hill of Marwah. You may also say takbir, tahlil or dua and send salawat upon the prophet.
  25. While performing Saee look out for the two green mileposts that indicate the stretch where it is sunnah for men to walk slowly while women can walk at the normal pace.
  26. Upon reaching Marwa, again face the Kaaba, and recite the same supplications that you did at Safa.
  27. This way, complete seven circuits between Safa and Marwa.
  28. Next, make a dua and perform two rakats of nafil Salah.
  29. Step out of the mosque with your left foot first in reciting the appropriate dua.
  30. The last step is to shave or trim your hair by at least an inch. Women are recommended to just trim their hair a little while men are recommended to shave the head completely.
